  • IRU calls upon Italian and EU authorities to stop road blockades immediately
In an urgent letter to the Italian Home Affairs Minister, Anna-Maria Cancellieri, and to European Commission Vice-President Antonio Tajani, the IRU today called for immediate action to lift blockades set up by striking Italian truck drivers to ensure the free movement of goods, and to guarantee the safety of other drivers and their trucks and launch the Rapid Intervention Mechanism. Due to the strikes, a large number of foreign trucks have been blocked throughout Italy, and despite the presence of Italian police, no interventions have been made to free circulation. The IRU considers this an unacceptable situation with regards to the commitments of Member States under Regulation 2679/98, which obliges them to notify to the Commission in advance major events such as demonstrations or road works concerning important routes, which could potentially impede trade.
